Writing your Caribbean stories

Writing Workshop | 2022

Writing workshop by Leian John-Baptiste

for The National Theatre

In response to working as the Staff Director on Small Island, the National Theatre asked Leian to deliver workshops in response to Small Island written by Helen Edmundson and Andrea Levy

2022- The National Theatre

This is an entry-level workshop aimed at new writers wishing to explore the Caribbean / Black British experience. Where possible, please watch Small Island before the first session as it will be a topic of discussion.

Join Leian John-Baptiste (staff director, Small Island) for this two-part workshop and sharing. We will come together to talk about the themes of Small Island and our responses (currently playing in the Olivier Theatre), share stories of our heritage, and be given some tools and advice on how to go about putting an idea on paper.

You will then write a short scene and submit it by noon on Friday 6 May. It will be read aloud by two professional actors on Sat 7 May in a group sharing session, when we will listen to each other's work and feedback.

for Donmar Warehouse and Fuel Theatre

Writers have created pieces that explore what human rights means to them.

2019

A new series of films, created by writers and community groups, responding to the subject of human rights as part of Fly The Flag.

Inspired by Ai Weiwei’s Flag celebrating universal human rights, Writing Wrongs brings together writers including Zainab Hasan, Sabrina Mahfouz, Natasha Simone, Monsay Whitney and Alexandra Wood with school and community groups for a 6-month project to create monologues that explore what these rights mean to them personally. The monologues have been made into films, which you can watch online.
